How Often Should I Have an Eye Test ?

For an adult with healthy eyes, we recommend having a sight test every 2 years. This allows us to check the health of your eyes, identify any eye health concerns and take appropriate action. We can check your vision and adjust your prescription for your glasses and contact lenses.

For children and adults with concerns about their vision, we recommend testing more frequently. This will help us closely monitor for any changes in their prescription.

Who is at Higher Risk of Developing Eye Conditions?

There are certain risk factors that increase your chances of having issues with the health of your eyes

Adults over the age of 60
Anyone with significant family history of eye disease
Those with Diabetes
Those with high blood pressure

If you have any of these risk factors, or you have any concerns about your eye health, come in and talk to one of our clinicians. We can advise you on how often you should come in for an eye test.

What Our Eye Test Includes

PRE-TEST & CLINICAL HISTORY

Detailed history

We will discuss any concerns or questions you have about your eye health or vision. Please tell us about any problems you may be experiencing regarding your eyes.

We will also ask questions to help screen for other conditions and to assess your personal risk. This will determine what investigations we need to do and any further action we may need to take.

Tonometry

"Eye pressure Tests"

This test will blow a small puff of air onto your eyes. This helps us determine the pressure inside the eyes.

Our clinicians use this information to determine your risk of developing glaucoma. It helps us monitor any internal eye pressures.

OCT Scan

An OCT scan is a non invasive eye imaging device which provides a detailed view of the retina, where normal retinal photographs only assess the outer most layer of the retina, an OCT exam generates a detailed scan of all 9 retinal layers.

Whereby each layer can be assessed individually and can aid practitioners in early detection of eye conditions such as glaucoma or macula degeneration. This imaging technique has revolutionised eyecare as we know.

Autorefractor

"Focussing tests"

This test will involve you looking through a lens and focusing on two photos. One close-up and one further away. This helps our clinicians work out if you are long sighted, short sighted or a mix of both. The Autorefractor will estimate your prescription prior to the test and we can test your eyes more rigorously during the main eye examination.

Slit Lamp

We use a special lens to zoom in and assess all the front parts of your eyes. These include the lens, iris and cornea.

We look for any scratches and signs

of infections.

Retinoscopy

Here we test how your eyes focus and how we can correct any issues found. We will place different lenses in front of your eyes to determine your eye power and your corrective lens power.

Ophthalmoscopy

We use a torch to have a look at the back of your eyes. We assess the retina, the blood vessels and the nerves.

This is very important as lots of eye diseases start here.

Snellen

We get you to read from a specialised chart called a Snellen chart. This helps us determine how well you can see with and without glasses. It helps us calculate your visual acuity and work out your prescription.

Fields

This test assesses the health in the peripheries of the eyes. We use dots of light to profile the extent of your peripheral vision.

It is a very powerful tool that enables us to investigate conditions such as glaucoma, retinal detachments and other neurological conditions.
